CHAPTER TWENTY

TWENTY MINUTES LATER, Anna Mae rushed into Raeann's in a whirlwind. "Good lord, Noelle. I'm so sorry." Her pixie face was flushed, and her platinum bob swung around her face as she slung her ginormous slouch bag up on the counter. "You wouldn't believe the day I've had already. I'm havin' the driveway refinished, and they parked right in front of the garage then left to go get supplies. I was parked in, seein’ as how I didn’t want tar all over my car." She shook her head. "Yesterday, Matt had to come pick me up because they didn't bother to tell me the end of the drive was gonna be too wet to drive over for several hours. Honestly, why they wouldn’t start at the top and work their way to the bottom is beyond me.”

"It's all good," I said, smiling. It was a rare thing to see her in a tizzy, and I pitied anybody who got on the wrong side of her. She was all of five-two and a buck ten, but I'd seen her take down a grown man with one kick—after demolishing his monster truck with a bat. In her defense, the guy was a murderer—he’d had it coming to him, and I was glad to see her dole it out. But I was a little worried about the pavers.

She pulled in a calming breath. "It is, now. You ready to go diggin' through junk?"

She owned a little thrift shop and antique store called Things Remembered. Whereas I bought mostly junk pieces and upcycled them into an entirely new piece, she mostly looked for stuff that was ready to flip. She didn't mind doing some cleaning or refinishing, but that was about it. She also bought retro clothing; I'd been surprised to find how popular it was.

"Heck yeah," I said. "Hunter's threatening to make me sit in while he interviews those women from Atlanta, so I wanna be as far away as possible."

Raeann slid two iced coffees across the counter to us. "Here's a pick-me-up for the road."

"Thanks," I said, grateful. The lack of sleep was starting to catch up with me already and it was only ten. I probably should have gone for a lighter breakfast, but that was spilled milk.

I drove since Anna Mae drove what amounted to a Matchbox car. It was gorgeous, but not exactly something we could haul furniture in. I was glad we'd scheduled the pick for today rather than tomorrow, because I didn't want Shelby to be alone. Emma had come over the night before and wasn't leaving 'til later that afternoon to see her dad. I'd be back in plenty of time.

The first auction was a bust. They had plenty of nice things, but it was all way too rich for my blood. Anna Mae picked up some 70s clothes that were in amazing shape and a few pieces of jewelry, but she didn't find much else, either.

The second auction was more our style. They held it in a huge barn because they were remodeling the inside of the house.
